(07-02-24) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) — Puntland security forces on Tuesday intercepted a boat laden with illegal weapons in the Ras Aser region, arresting three individuals believed to be involved in weapons smuggling, according to Puntland Police statement.
The operation, led by Major Fu’ad Mohamud Hussein, showcased a coordinated effort between the police forces and the Coast Guard of Puntland. Seized items included modern firearms, ammunition, and fuel, indicating the sophisticated nature of the operations in the area.
Major Fu’ad confirmed that the arrested suspects are set to face legal action, emphasising the administration’s commitment to uphold the law and ensure maritime security. The operation is a part of Puntland’s broader initiative to combat piracy and illegal arms trafficking, underscoring the persistent threat along Somalia’s coastline.
This operation comes after last Friday, Puntland’s Police Chief, General Muumin Abdi Shire, joined forces with officials from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany at a conference in Nairobi on Friday focusing on combating the persistent threats of terrorism, piracy, and weapons smuggling.
