(02-02-24) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) — In a late-night operation, Puntland police have detained several men accused of rape and mobile phone theft in Garowe, authorities announced Thursday. The operation, led by the Nugal Regional Police Command, marks a significant step in the fight against crime in the region.
Officials said the arrests were part of a targeted effort to address the rising concerns over public safety and criminal activities in Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland. “The operation carried out in the middle of the night, resulted in the successful apprehension of individuals involved in rape and theft of mobile phones,” a police statement detailed.
The crackdown also led to the detention of several individuals under the influence of drugs and alcohol, some of whom sustained injuries during the police action. Authorities also seized weapons in the operation, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement officers in their pursuit of justice.
The Nugal Regional Police Command’s decisive action has been met with public approval, as residents of Garowe express relief at the authorities’ efforts to curb the menace of crime in their city. “This operation sends a clear message that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated in our community,” said a police spokesperson.
The operation underscores the challenges confronting Somalia’s security forces as they grapple with issues of lawlessness and criminality in a region plagued by instability. Yet, it also reflects the commitment of the Puntland police to enforce law and order and protect the rights and safety of its citizens.
As the suspects await prosecution, the Nugal Regional Police Command has called for increased public vigilance and cooperation in reporting crimes.
