(20-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Somalia and Uganda have taken a significant step forward in their defence relations by signing an enhanced memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Mogadishu on Tuesday. This supplementary agreement aims to deepen the military collaboration between the two nations, building on a foundation established in 2022.

The Ugandan Defence Minister, Mr. Vincent B. Ssempijja, arrived in Mogadishu with a senior delegation for a three working visit. They were received by Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr. Abdifatah Qasim, at Aden Adde International Airport, highlighting the visit’s significance to the Somali government.

The delegation’s discussions at the Somali Ministry of Defence were focused on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation. The talks underscored a shared commitment to enhancing military ties and addressing regional security challenges.

The supplementary agreement, officially titled the Supplementary Agreement to the MoU Between the Ministry of Defence, Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs of the Republic of Uganda on Defence Co-operation, was signed by Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, Somalia’s Minister of Defence, and Mr. Ssempijja. This agreement is a follow-up to the initial MoU signed on 8th August 2022, in Entebbe, Uganda.
