(25 March 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on an ATMIS military base on the outskirts of Barawe, Lower Shabelle, officials confirmed on Monday. The night assault triggered intense clashes between the Africa Union mission troops, particularly those from Uganda, and the insurgents.
According to local sources, the exchange of gunfire and heavy weaponry resounded through the area, signifying a fierce confrontation between the Ugandan ATMIS forces and the Al-Shabaab attackers.
The ATMIS troops, with support from the Somali National Army, managed to repel the militants, following up with a pursuit of the attackers in the Barawe vicinity. Despite the operation’s success, the situation has stabilised; however, there has yet to be an official statement from either ATMIS or Somali government officials on the aftermath of the conflict.
On social media, the group claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging damage to the Ugandan army base but has not provided casualty details.
This incursion adds to a series of attacks in the Lower Shabelle region, escalating concerns over Al-Shabaab’s renewed aggression against the Somali National Army and ATMIS bases in Hirshabelle, Southwest and Galmudug States.
