(07-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Gedo region is currently facing heightened tensions following a recent reshuffle by Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe, according to local reports. The changes, which involved appointing new deputy governors and commissioners for the districts of Burdhubo and Beled-Hawo, have sparked controversy and unrest among factions within the region.

Local sources indicate that forces loyal to the old administration and those backing the new appointments are now in a standoff, particularly in the district of Burdhubo. “The situation is difficult, we are in the city and they are outside, it is on the verge of a tribal war,” Nur Shig Shigow, a local leader opposing the new administration, told Kulmiye Radio on Thursday.

The dissatisfaction stems from the changes made to the local governance, especially the replacement of the Burdhubo district governor. Opponents of the reshuffle, like Shig Shigow, have vehemently rejected the new appointments, attributing the rising tension to these recent administrative decisions.

Shig Shigow expressed his concerns, stating, “We reject the letter that came out yesterday. The responsibility for the problem arising from the situation there will be taken by the senior leaders of the Jubbaland regional administration.” He specifically held Jubbaland’s top officials, including President Ahmed Madobe and the interior minister, accountable for any escalation in violence.

Amid the growing unrest, there have been calls for dialogue and peaceful resolution. Shigow appealed for the withdrawal of the contentious decree, suggesting that reconciliation is possible through mutual understanding and negotiation. “I call for this letter to be withdrawn and the old administration reinstated” he reiterated, emphasizing the need for consensus and calm.

The Gedo region has experienced numerous administrative disputes in the past, hindering its development and stability.
