(10-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — A devastating fire, ignited by an explosion believed to be caused by a landmine concealed in garbage, tore through the heart of Mogadishu’s Bakara Market on Sunday. The incident resulted in at least one fatality and inflicted injuries on several individuals, as reported by the police.

The blast led to rapid flames engulfing nearby shops and stalls, culminating in extensive damage. Somali Police Spokesman Qasim Ahmed Roble has confirmed these casualties and announced that an in-depth investigation into the origins of the explosion is actively underway.

Preliminary assessments have determined that 12 commercial blocks within the market have sustained significant damage. The disaster has disrupted the daily routines of countless vendors, compelling them to cease operations and evaluate their considerable losses.

“The market was a hub of activity before this tragedy; now, it lies in ruins,” remarked a visibly shaken trader, shedding light on the persistent issue of such disastrous events in the region.

Officials from the Banadir region have swiftly responded, visiting the devastated site to assess the damage and strategize the necessary response efforts. The recurring nature of fires in Bakara Market has sparked serious concerns regarding the existing safety standards and the efficacy of the emergency response systems in place.
