(06-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Somali government has provided an update on the progress of the financial war against Al-Shabaab. As per the statement, the federal government has frozen $7 million accumulated by the terrorist groups, and deactivated 670 phone numbers along with 110 merchant accounts.
The statement explained that the targeted accounts were used by terrorist groups for intimidating practices and the accumulation and storage of illicit funds extorted from the Somali people.
The Somali government reaffirmed its dedication to the ongoing campaign to cripple Al-Shabaab financially. It extended its gratitude to the local business community and the wider Somali people for their unwavering support and collaboration with state efforts.
Meanwhile, the government has urged the public to report any financial activities linked to Al-Shabaab to financial and security institutions for swift response measures. The government also cautioned businesspeople and all citizens against acquiescing to extortion demands, which serve to bolster Al-Shabaab’s detrimental activities against the country and the people.
