(21 March 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to discuss enhancing bilateral relations and security cooperation, highlighting the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen regional partnerships.
Following a distressing terrorist attack at the SYL Hotel in Mogadishu, President Mohamud saw off 19 injured victims who were sent for medical treatment in Turkey, underscoring the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
In a concerted effort to ramp up anti-terrorism measures, President Mohamud, also the Commander-in-Chief of the Somali Armed Forces, presided over a crucial meeting with defence officials, focusing on accelerating anti-terror operations against the backdrop of increasing threats from Al Shabab militants.
Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre led discussions on bolstering the country’s security and dismantling terrorist networks. His visits to the National Intelligence Agency and the Somali Police Command aimed to evaluate and reinforce the security infrastructure.
The Somali Cabinet’s approval of the nine-member Somali National Media Council marked a step towards enhancing media freedom and governance.
In humanitarian efforts, Prime Minister Barre’s dialogue with Charles Mballa, the UNHCR’s representative, centred on the situation of refugees and internally displaced persons, reflecting the government’s dedication to addressing humanitarian issues.
Amid security concerns, the Somali police reported a fatal terrorist attack by Al Shabab at the SYL Hotel, resulting in casualties among soldiers and civilians, including three Members of Parliament. The swift response by security forces ended in eliminating the five attackers.
On the international front, Somalia’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Bihi Iman Ige, secured a significant financial reprieve with a $2 billion debt forgiveness from the Paris Club, enhancing the country’s economic outlook.
Military advancements were noted with the Somali National Army receiving new combat vehicles from the European Union, bolstering the military’s capacity against insurgent threats.
The week also saw proactive military operations against Al Shabab, with significant casualties reported amongst the militants, showcasing the national forces’ ongoing commitment to the eradication of terrorism.
Humanitarian aid distribution continued, with the Somali National Disaster Management Agency assisting vulnerable populations, highlighting the continued focus on social welfare.
