(07 April 2024) MECCA (Halqabsi News) — Somalia and Saudi Arabia have entered into a security cooperation agreement, a move that signifies a strengthening of ties between the two nations amid regional tensions. Signed in Mecca on Sunday, the deal is aimed at enhancing security, defence, and economic collaboration, with a focus on addressing shared challenges and promoting stability in the Horn of Africa.
This strategic partnership emerges at a critical time, particularly given the existing tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia over Somaliland. It underscores Saudi Arabia’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and marks the Kingdom’s intent to play a more assertive role in regional security dynamics.
The agreement is part of an ongoing trend of deepening relations between the two countries, following a previous pact to bolster Somalia’s energy sector. It highlights Somalia’s strategic importance in the Red Sea region and Saudi Arabia’s ambition to expand its influence, countering other regional powers.
