(02 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Tuesday, officially announced Dr. Mary Otieno as its new Country Representative in Somalia, succeeding Mr. Niyi Ojuolape. Dr. Otieno, hailing from Kenya, assumes her new role in Mogadishu, bringing over two decades of experience in reproductive health, gender equality, and human rights.
Previously stationed in Kampala, Uganda, Dr. Otieno has been instrumental in developing strategies and programmes aimed at enhancing sexual and reproductive health, addressing HIV, and combating gender-based violence across the African continent. Her expertise is expected to support UNFPA’s ongoing efforts in Somalia, focusing on population and development, integrated sexual and reproductive health, and the promotion of gender equality.
The new Country Representative is expected to present her credentials to the Somali government shortly, marking the official commencement of her duties. Dr. Otieno’s leadership and strategic vision are anticipated to drive forward UNFPA’s mission in Somalia, aiming for impactful outcomes in health, rights, and gender equality.
