Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Wednesday engaged with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission of Kenya to explore how Somalia can utilise their expertise in election management. The initiative aligns with Somalia’s priority under the government Aaenda to establish a free public election, empowering the people to elect its leaders and regain governmental control. By drawing on Kenya’s experience with modern electoral processes, Somalia seeks to implement transparent and fair voting mechanisms.
As Somalia embarks on a transformative journey towards democracy, Prime Minister Hamza is keen on reinforcing the democratic framework, emphasised by recent constitutional amendments and parliamentary approvals of critical electoral system chapters. He expressed a commitment to learning about the policies, systems, and tools essential for conducting a successful “one-person one-vote” election. Acknowledging Kenya’s successful implementation of fair electoral practices, Mr. Barre plans to invite members of the Kenyan electoral commission to Somalia, aiming to replicate these methods to ensure the integrity and fairness of upcoming national elections.
