(25-06-24) BAIDOA (Halqabsi News) – Reports of fierce clashes within the Al-Shabaab group have emerged from the Ufurow village of the Bay region in South West State of Somalia. The fighting, which reportedly erupted over disputes related to extortion money and looted livestock, has resulted in casualties and heightened tensions within the militant organisation.
The Somali government, in a statement, confirmed the infighting and attributed it to disagreements over the distribution of funds and resources forcibly taken from local communities. Government media further highlighted the growing internal divisions within Al-Shabaab, exacerbated by the ongoing government offensive against the group.
At least two Al-Shabaab members are reported to have been killed in the clashes, with another injured. The situation in the area remains tense as both factions mobilize additional forces.
Al-Shabaab has not issued any statement regarding the internal conflict. However, analysts suggest that the group’s internal rifts have deepened since the Somali government intensified its military operations against them, leading to the loss of territory and resources.
