(06-06-24) NEW YORK (Halqabsi News) – Somalia was elected to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term on Thursday, marking a historic return to the global stage after over 50 years. This election, confirmed during a session at the UN headquarters in New York, is a major milestone in the nation’s diplomatic efforts.
Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Fiqi, expressed his gratitude for the “overwhelming support” from UN member states and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to promoting peace and security worldwide. The Somali Mission to the UN echoed this sentiment, stating, “Somalia is committed to the values of the UN charter and working closely with all Member States to advocate for peace everywhere, for everyone.”
Former President Mohamed Farmaajo praised the achievement, recalling the initial efforts launched in 2018 that paved the way for this success. He congratulated the people of Somalia and underscored the nation’s resilience and strength.
Somalia secured an impressive 179 votes in the single round of balloting, with 190 member states participating. Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, and Greece were also elected alongside Somalia.
