(20-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) –  In response to recent incidents of weapon smuggling and militia violence, the Somali Cabinet has taken decisive action by approving two critical draft bills on Friday.

The first bill aims to establish an Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission, paving the way for a more transparent and accountable electoral process in the country. The government has previously indicated that future elections will follow a one-person-one-vote system.

The second bill focuses on stringent arms control measures, addressing the growing concern over the proliferation of illegal weapons in Somalia. This comes after a major arms smuggling incident in Galmudug earlier this month, where a convoy carrying heavy weaponry was ambushed and looted by local militias.

The new regulations prohibit the sale, trade, import, export, manufacture, and distribution of all types of arms and military supplies within Somalia, with limited exceptions for registered light weapons like AK47s and pistols.

Strict penalties will be imposed on violators, including confiscation of illegal arms, surveillance, and restrictions. The Ministry of Internal Security, along with state security ministries, will enforce the new measures, with regular reports submitted to the National Security Council.

The Cabinet also approved a policy on the procurement of arms, ammunition, and military equipment, further solidifying the government’s commitment to regulating the arms trade and enhancing security in the country.

These measures come into effect immediately and mark a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by illegal arms and ensuring a more democratic electoral process in Somalia.
