(09-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during his current visit to Eritrea, joined Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in inspecting Somali Air Force units undergoing training at the Eritrean Air Force Base (EAF) in Asmara.
President Mohamud greeted the trainees and received briefings from officers and soldiers on the training program. The visit underscores the growing security cooperation between the two nations.
This visit marks the second time President Mohamud has travelled to Asmara this year. The first visit occurred shortly after a controversial agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which sought to grant Ethiopia access to Somali waters through Somaliland’s territory. This agreement has been strongly opposed by the Somali government.
With relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia deteriorating since the end of the Tigray conflict, Somalia’s ties with Eritrea are viewed as increasingly important. The two presidents are expected to discuss further strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation on various issues during President Mohamud’s visit.
