(28-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The United States Embassy in Mogadishu has extended its congratulations to the people of Puntland and the Puntland Electoral Commission (PEC) for the successful completion of local council elections in the Nugal region. This marks the culmination of local council elections across Puntland, which began last year.
The embassy highlighted the significance of thousands of Puntlanders exercising their right to vote, describing it as a major development in Somalia’s journey towards effective governance and democracy.
The European Union also commended the Puntland Electoral Commission and the electorate for participating in the recent elections held in Garowe, Dangorayo, and Godobjiran districts. The EU underscored that these elections provide a vital opportunity for the public to exercise their rights and represent an important step forward in Somalia’s democratization process.
Earlier, the United Nations commended Puntland for the peaceful conduct of the ‘one person, one vote’ elections in the Nugaal region. The UN praised Puntland’s experience with direct elections, noting that it could serve as a model for expanding inclusive democratic participation across Somalia at all levels of government.
