(23 July 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Seven young Somali migrants, held captive in Libyan prisons for an extended period, have returned to Mogadishu. Their repatriation was facilitated by a joint effort involving the Office of the Special Envoy for Migrants and Children’s Rights, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Somali Embassy in Libya, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
These young individuals were among the thousands of Somali migrants detained in Libya while attempting to cross the treacherous desert regions of Sudan and Libya in search of better opportunities in Europe. Their release marks a step in ongoing efforts to address the plight of Somali migrants trapped in dire circumstances abroad.
The returnees were welcomed at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, where they were reunited with their families and loved ones. Government officials and representatives from supporting organisations were present to offer assistance and resources to help the returnees reintegrate into Somali society.
