(28 Aug 2024) JOWHAR (Halqabsi News) – Somali government forces successfully repelled an Al-Shabaab attack on a military base in the Raahoy village, situated between the towns of Balad and Jowhar, 70 km north of Mogadishu, amidst heavy gunfire exchanges overnight.
Residents reported hearing intense gunfire between the two sides, although the extent of the damage remains unclear.
“We were woken up by the sound of heavy gunfire. It was terrifying,” said one resident Ahmed Geedi speaking to Halqabsi News
Government officials confirmed that they successfully defended the base and the situation has now calmed.
“Our brave soldiers fought back valiantly and repelled the attack,” said a military spokesperson in Raahoy, Lt Mohamed Ali, with the Somali National Army. “The situation is now under control.”
The road linking Balad and Jowhar districts is known to be a frequent target for Al-Shabaab ambushes, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region.
