(31 Aug 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Somali government has significantly bolstered its air capabilities with the arrival of four Bell 412EPX helicopters, a generous donation from the Italian government. The $16 million shipment represents the largest single delivery of military equipment to Somalia since lifting the arms embargo, marking a crucial step in the nation’s ongoing fight against the Al-Shabaab insurgency.
These versatile twin-engine helicopters are expected to be pivotal in various operations, including troop transport, medical evacuations, and search and rescue missions. The Bell 412’s reputation for reliability and robust design make it well-suited for Somalia’s challenging terrain and climate.
The delivery comes as Somalia prepares to enter the second phase of its offensive against Al-Shabaab. The AU Peace and Security Council has endorsed a proposal to form the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which will take over from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which replaced the country’s first mission (AMISOM) in April 2022.
The Bell 412s will enhance the Somali National Army’s ability to rapidly deploy forces and provide essential support to remote areas, bolstering counter-insurgency efforts.
