(24 Sep 2024) NEW YORK (Halqabsi News) – Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, met with IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The discussions centered on strengthening regional cooperation and addressing pressing issues in the Horn of Africa.
Dr. Gebeyehu, in a tweet following the meeting, highlighted that the dialogue focused on regional peace and security, with particular attention given to the strained relations between Somalia and Ethiopia. The IGAD chief reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to facilitating peace and reducing tensions between the two neighbouring countries, both members of IGAD, to promote stability and enhance regional collaboration.
Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its side underscored the importance of the meeting, noting that both sides discussed ways to advance peace and security efforts in the region and to tackle the broader challenges affecting the Horn of Africa.
The meeting comes as part of ongoing efforts by IGAD to promote dialogue and cooperation among its member states, particularly in light of the growing regional security concerns.
