(02 Sep 2024) HARGEISA (Halqabsi News) – Somaliland opposition MP Mohamed Abib was this morning arrested at Egal Airport in Hargeisa upon his return from the United Arab Emirates, where he had recently given an interview critical of the government and the ruling Kulmiye Party. The reasons for his arrest remain undisclosed, raising concerns and speculation.
Abib’s detention comes after the Somaliland Attorney General had previously sought to have his parliamentary immunity lifted, a motion that has been stalled due to opposition from fellow MPs. The legal action followed a series of disagreements between Abib and the Speaker of the House, along with accusations of legal violations, which the legislator has consistently denied.
Following his arrest, Abib has reached out to his constituents in Borama, seeking their support and maintaining his innocence against the charges brought against him.
