(02 Sep 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Upper House of Somalia’s Federal Parliament, led by Speaker Hon. Abdi Hashi Abdullahi and Second Deputy Speaker Hon. Abdullahi Ali Hirsi Tima’Adde, met for the 14th session of its fifth sitting on Monday to conduct the first reading of the National Disability Rights Protection Bill.
The bill, presented by Minister of Family and Human Rights, Bashir Mohamed Jama, underscores the importance of protecting the rights of Somali citizens with disabilities. Minister Jama highlighted the bill’s crucial role in ensuring their welfare and inclusion in society.
The session concluded with Speaker Abdi Hashi directing the Senate’s Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Religious Affairs, Endowments, Human Rights, Women, and Children to review the bill. The committee is tasked with fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities and returning the bill to the plenary session for further deliberation.
This bill was passed by the Parliament’s House of the People on 31 July. The federal Ministry of Family and Human Rights as well as the United Nations hailed the confirmation as an important milestone for all persons with disabilities in Somalia.
