(14 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somalia’s Upper House Speaker, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, and Deputy Prime Minister, Salah Ahmed Jama, have resolved a recent conflict regarding Jama’s Upper House seat. The dispute began after Speaker Hashi declared the seat vacant due to Jama’s extended absence, citing a failure to attend four consecutive sessions. Hashi’s decision, aimed at filling the vacancy, was met with strong resistance from the Deputy Prime Minister, who argued that his absences were a result of his national duties, allowed under constitutional and Upper House provisions.
Following the exchange of letters between the two officials, mediation efforts were initiated to resolve the matter. The process involved several government officials and influential figures, culminating in a face-to-face meeting on Monday, where Speaker Hashi formally withdrew his decision, allowing Jama to retain his position in the Upper House.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Jama issued a statement affirming the resolution of the dispute. He expressed gratitude to MPs, officials, and intellectuals who worked to mediate an amicable settlement. Jama confirmed that he would continue to represent his constituency in the Upper House, emphasising his commitment to his duties under the UH50 seat.
