(10 Nov 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News)— President Ahmed Abdi Kariye ‘Qoorqoor’ of Galmudug has announced his administration’s readiness to conduct direct, one-person-one-vote elections, as Somalia’s National Consultative Council agreed. Speaking at the opening of the 11th session of the Galmudug House of Representatives, Qoorqoor highlighted the commitment to a transparent electoral process, aiming to empower the Somali people in choosing their leaders.
The decision aligns with a recent National Consultative Council meeting in Mogadishu, which resolved to shift Somalia towards direct elections, constitutional reforms, and a roadmap for national progress. The Galmudug leader noted that despite challenges, including terrorism and political conflicts, Galmudug is prepared to play its role in implementing the electoral plans as swiftly as possible.
In a related development, the Speakers of Somalia’s Federal Parliament recently formed an interim committee to draft election laws and regulations for political parties. The committee will also work on establishing the electoral commission and demarcating boundaries, ensuring the foundations for the planned electoral transition are solidly laid.
