(11 Nov 2024) KISMAYO (Halqabsi News) — Jubaland Planning Minister Abdirahman Abdi Ahmed briefed the various United Nations agencies operating in Kismayo on the political, security, and humanitarian situation in the region on Monday.
On the political front, the Minister updated representatives on the political situation of the country and state, acknowledging the role of international partners, such as the UN, in supporting Somalia’s state-building process. Minister Ahmed expressed gratitude for their support in enhancing the stability and security of local communities. He reaffirmed Jubaland’s commitment to democratic values and constitutional principles, emphasising the importance of timely elections to prevent a leadership vacuum that could lead to political instability.
Regarding security, the Minister highlighted significant successes in the fight against Al-Shabaab, noting that many areas have been reclaimed from the group. However, he expressed concern about the persistent threat posed by the group. He emphasised the need for sustained efforts and continued international support to curb ongoing threats and help the administration establish stabilisation programmes in liberated areas.
On the humanitarian front, the Minister pointed out that an anticipated drought in the region requires proactive planning and action. He agreed with UN agencies to enhance collaborative efforts to build community resilience and mitigate the effects of the drought.
