(29 Dec 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Federal Minister of Interior Security, General Abdullahi Sheikh Osman Fartaag, has issued an urgent appeal to end ongoing clashes between the Hawiye and Rahanweyn clans in the southwestern region of Somalia.
“These senseless conflicts are destroying lives and hindering the progress of our nation,” General Fartaag stated during a press conference. “I urge all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities and engage in meaningful dialogue.”
The clashes, which have been ongoing for several weeks, have resulted in civilian casualties and displaced thousands of people. The underlying causes of the conflict are believed to be a combination of historical grievances, land disputes, and competition for resources.
The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to peace and reconciliation. “The Ministry of Interior Security is deploying mediation teams to the affected areas and working with traditional elders and community leaders to facilitate dialogue and build trust between the warring factions,” General Fartaag said.
However, achieving lasting peace remains a significant challenge. The region has a history of violence, and armed groups continue to operate in the area, exacerbating tensions. The government faces the daunting task of addressing the root causes of the conflict while also ensuring the safety and security of all civilians.
