(16 Dec 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has successfully dismantled a significant portion of Al-Shabaab’s online propaganda network, shutting down over 12,000 accounts across various social media platforms and websites.

In a coordinated effort with federal government agencies overseeing the internet and media, NISA identified and neutralized accounts used by the militant group to spread extremist ideologies, incite violence, and disseminate false information. Most of these accounts were anonymously created, employing deceptive tactics to evade detection.

A breakdown of the closures, spanning from July to December 2024, reveals that Facebook was the primary platform exploited by Al-Shabaab, followed by TikTok and Telegram. While the number of affected websites was relatively smaller, the impact on the group’s online operations is substantial.

This latest action builds upon previous efforts by the Ministry of Information to curb Al-Shabaab’s digital influence. The combined efforts of government agencies have significantly reduced the group’s online presence, hindering its ability to recruit new members and mobilise support.

By disrupting Al-Shabaab’s online propaganda machine, NISA has dealt a significant blow to the group’s ability to radicalise individuals and spread fear. This proactive approach demonstrates the government’s capacity to adapt to evolving threats and protect the nation’s digital landscape.
