(18 Dec 2024) GALKAYO (Halqabsi News) — Puntland has accused Somalia’s federal government of attempting to destabilise its territories by fueling tribal conflicts. The accusation came during a security conference held in Galkayo today, attended by members of the Mudug Regional Security Committee.

The Governor of Mudug region, speaking after the meeting, alleged that the federal government was stockpiling weapons to incite inter-clan violence and undermine Puntland’s unity.

“The meeting served as a warning against federal manipulation,” the governor said. “We will not tolerate any attempts to divide the people of Puntland. Legal action will be taken against anyone who surrenders to the federal government and disrupts the unity of Mudug.”

The meeting primarily focused on security concerns in the Mudug region, including terrorism, robberies, vehicle theft, smuggling, and cross-border movement of people and vehicles. Discussions also covered progress on local clan reconciliation efforts.

“There has been significant progress in regional clan reconciliation,” the governor said. “Updates were shared on ongoing negotiations, as well as steps to reduce robberies and monitor movement across the region. A plan has been adopted to better regulate traffic of people and animals to enhance security.”

The governor insisted that the federal government should instead concentrate on combating terrorism in eastern regions and strengthening cooperation with Puntland to address shared security concerns in Mudug.

The conference concluded with a resolution calling for enhanced cooperation among security agencies to ensure citizen safety through coordinated and transparent efforts.
