(18 Dec 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Somali government has announced the safe return of 147 migrants from Libya, where they endured detention and exploitation under harsh conditions. The group arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu on Wednesday and was welcomed by government officials.
Many of the returnees had been subjected to abuse and unsafe conditions during their time in Libya. The repatriation was made possible through collaboration with the European Union (EU) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Maryan Yasin Haji, Somalia’s Special Envoy for Migrants and Children’s Rights, urged Somalis abroad to contact the Somali Embassy in Libya if they require assistance.
Officials confirmed that the returnees included individuals from both Mogadishu and Hargeisa.
In a statement, the Federal Government of Somalia emphasised its commitment to repatriating citizens facing hardship abroad. “This initiative is part of a broader strategy to safeguard Somali citizens from the dangers of irregular migration and its associated risks,” it said.
The government added that its partnership with international organisations reflects a strong dedication to addressing migration challenges and protecting vulnerable Somalis.
