The federal government has launched a campaign in Beledweyne to address the persistent illegal roadblocks plaguing the Hiran region. During a meeting with traditional elders, recently appointed Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Dahir Shire Mohamed stressed the urgency of finding a lasting solution to the insecurity and illegal tolls, which have crippled the region’s economic and social progress.
Minister Dahir highlighted how the roadblocks have wreaked havoc on trade, with local businesses suffering from dwindling sales and disrupted transportation of goods and livestock. He shared accounts from traders, including one who reported an eight-month halt in operations due to exorbitant illegal fees and unsafe travel conditions.
Calling for decisive action, the Minister urged community leaders to draw a line in the sand and stand against those fuelling the region’s insecurity and setbacks. He emphasised that development and prosperity could only be achieved if all parties united to dismantle the numerous roadblocks that have become a thorn in the region.
Traditional elders responded by pledging their commitment to the cause. They vowed to work towards the removal of all illegal roadblocks, which have not only stifled trade but also triggered skyrocketing prices of essential goods across the Hiran region. The city of Beledweyne has recently hosted senior federal government officials, who arrived to participate in the funeral of six SNA soldiers killed in a clan revenge attack.
