(23 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – BBC News Africa journalist Fardawsa Osman Hanshi, a Somali-Kenyan journalist renowned for her reporting on stories about marginalized communities, migration, and humanitarian issues, has been awarded the BBC Global Women in News Award at a ceremony in London.
The accolade recognises her “exceptional contributions to journalism and commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.” Hanshi, who travelled to London last week for the event, shared her gratitude in a Facebook post, writing: “Beyond grateful to be among the women recognised today at the BBC Global Women in News Awards! This moment is a celebration of every challenge overcome and every story shared.”
Based in Nairobi, Hanshi has reported from Somalia, Kenya, and the Horn of Africa, often covering stories in high-risk environments. Her work has shed light on the impact of climate change on pastoralist communities, the plight of refugees, and raising awareness of stigma against persons with disabilities.
The BBC Global Women in News Awards celebrate women who overcome challenges in media and all aspects of life, particularly in regions where press freedom and gender equality face significant hurdles. Hanshi, who joined the BBC in 2018, has frequently highlighted the role of women in peacebuilding and the unique threats they face as journalists in male-dominated fields. Past awardees include journalists from Syria, Somalia, Kenya, Afghanistan and Brazil.
Colleagues praised her mentorship of young journalists, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.
In her acceptance remarks, Hanshi dedicated the award to “women who persist despite silence and stigma.” She plans to continue focusing on underreported crises.”
