(12 Mar 2025) BOSASO (Halqabsi News) – The Puntland government has announced plans to roll out its first-ever agency dedicated to tackling illegal money laundering, a financial crime often exploited by terrorist networks like ISIS. Speaking to business leaders in the Bari region during a meeting in Bosaso, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni revealed that the government is gearing up to establish a specialised agency aimed at curbing illicit financial flows.
“A dedicated agency to combat illegal money laundering will soon be up and running,” President Deni told the gathering, stressing that extremist groups heavily rely on laundering dirty money to fund their activities.
The president also reassured the business community that Puntland has made significant headway in dismantling ISIS-linked extortion rings, which had long preyed on Bosaso’s traders by demanding so-called ‘Zakat’ payments under duress.
