(22 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somali government troops have been deployed to secure the Mogadishu-Afgooye corridor, following reports of Al-Shabab activity in the area.
Somali National Army (SNA) units were deployed on Friday, and residents reported new security checkpoints along the highway. Troops are inspecting vehicles.
The deployment follows reports of Al-Shabab fighters being seen on the outskirts of Mogadishu in Ceelasha Biyaha, Lafoole, and Xaawo Cabdi, where they reportedly patrolled streets and turned off streetlights.
“They told people they were here in peace, but the fear was real,” one resident told Halqabsi News.
Al-Shabab has also reportedly regained control of territory in parts of Lower and Middle Shabelle regions. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is currently coordinating military operations in Cadale district.
Security analysts have warned that Al-Shabab attacks have increased and that government troops are overstretched. They also pointed to organisational problems in some areas.
The government has said it will prevent further incursions, but residents have expressed concern about Al-Shabab’s presence near Mogadishu.
