(24 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somali government forces, backed by local Macawisley fighters, have successfully repelled a pre-dawn Al-Shabaab attack on Wargaadhi village in Middle Shabelle and regained full control of its strategic airstrip.
The attack began early Thursday with a series of coordinated IEDS, followed by intense firefights. Militants briefly entered the area, setting fire to several structures and military vehicles before being driven out by government troops.
Colonel Mohamed Ibrahim Interfeer, commander of the Gorgor Commando Unit, speaking from the frontline, confirmed the counter-offensive: “They tried to overrun our positions, but we forced them to retreat. Wargaadhi is firmly under our control.”
The Ministry of Defence issued a statement affirming the military’s hold:
“Wargaadhi remains fully under the control of the Somali National Army and local forces. Joint security operations continue to ensure stability and safety in the area. The SNA stands firm — no inch of Somali soil will be surrendered to terror.”
The assault comes amid growing Al-Shabaab offensives in Middle Shabelle, following their recent capture of Aadan Yabaal. Analysts suggest the group is attempting to expand its foothold in the region by exploiting overstretched security forces.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, including an IED strike that allegedly killed several soldiers, though these claims have not been independently verified. Somali commanders stated that many militants were killed, and assessments are underway to determine the full scale of casualties.
Wargaadhi’s airstrip is crucial in logistics and aerial support for ongoing counterterrorism operations. Its defence is considered essential to the broader campaign against Al-Shabaab.
Security officials report that the area is now calm, with stabilisation operations ongoing. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to fully liberate all territories still under Al-Shabaab control.
