(02 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs has called for greater unity among the country’s Islamic scholars, saying they are vital to fostering social cohesion and countering extremism.

Speaking at the launch of a new national scholars’ council in Mogadishu on Sunday night, Sheikh Mukhtar Robow Ali (Abu Mansuur) stressed the government’s commitment to bridging divisions within the religious community. “Our scholars are the backbone of society,” he said. “Their unity is not just a goal—it is necessary to preserve our values and counter extremism.”

The new council, comprising prominent clerics from across Somalia, aims to streamline religious guidance on national issues and reduce sectarian disputes. Mr. Robow hailed the initiative as a “historic step” towards strengthening the role of scholars in promoting peace and stability.

The minister also praised the consensus on the start of Ramadan this year, avoiding the frequent disagreements over moon sightings. “This collective agreement is a testament to our growing unity,” he remarked.

Addressing the conflict with the Al-Shabab militant group, Mr. Robow expressed unwavering support for Somali security forces. “Our troops are sacrificing daily to liberate our people from terror,” he said. “We stand with them in this fight.” His remarks come amid a renewed government offensive against the Al-Qaeda-linked insurgency.

Mr. Robow urged scholars to use their influence to combat extremist ideologies and support reconciliation efforts. “Our mosques and schools must be spaces of enlightenment, not division,” he said.

The event was attended by senior clerics and officials.
