(05 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — France has welcomed the unanimous renewal of sanctions against Al-Shabaab, reaffirming its commitment to supporting Somalia in its fight against the militant group. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, France’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Charge d’Affaires Jay Dharmadhikari, expressed appreciation to the United Kingdom for its efforts in securing the renewal of the sanctions regime. The decision, enshrined in Resolution 2762 (2024), extends the measures for another year and underscores the international community’s backing of Somalia and its partners in countering Al-Shabaab.

Dharmadhikari emphasised that Al-Shabaab remains a significant threat to peace and security in Somalia and the wider region, which is already grappling with multiple crises and conflicts. He reiterated France’s readiness to work with the Security Council to ensure the full effectiveness of the sanctions regime, aligning with the Somali government’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

Additionally, France voiced concerns over the illegal flow of arms and ammunition from Yemen to Somalia, which violates the arms embargo imposed on Al-Shabaab. The French representative stressed the importance of preventing the group from establishing ties with other sanctioned entities in the region, including the Houthis.

The resolution’s adoption highlights the continued international resolve to curb Al-Shabaab’s influence and disrupt its access to resources that fuel instability in Somalia and beyond.
