(24 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, has pledged support for Somalia’s counter-terrorism efforts and its plans for a one-person, one-vote electoral system.

Speaking at an event in Mogadishu, Mr Youssouf praised President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s leadership in the fight against al-Shabab.

“Somalia is on a path to achieving full statehood. As long as I am Chairperson of the African Union, our support to Somalia will not stop,” Mr Youssouf said.

He commended the Somali government’s efforts to “liberate territories from al-Shabab” and said the AU would assist Somalia in building “self-reliant national institutions.”

Mr Youssouf also expressed support for Somalia’s electoral plans, saying that holding popular elections is “critical for Somalia’s democratic future.”

The event was attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, parliamentary leaders, and African ambassadors based in Mogadishu.
