(15 Apr 2025) LASCANOD (Halqabsi News) – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has officially taken custody of 25 detainees originally from Somaliland, captured during recent clashes in the Sool region, according to a statement issued following his visit to SSC-Khaatumo.
The detainees were handed over to the Federal Government by SSC-Khaatumo authorities after consultations with regional councils. Officials said the individuals were held under exceptional circumstances and would now be reunited with their families.
“As part of the national reconciliation programme led by the Prime Minister, the SSC-Khaatumo Administration, after wide consultation, has transferred 25 detainees to the Federal Government of Somalia,” the statement read. “The Federal Government will return them safely to their relatives.”
Although not formally confirmed, the move is believed to be part of a broader detainee exchange plan between SSC-Khaatumo and Somaliland. Unofficial reports suggest that 283 Somaliland-origin prisoners are currently held in Lasanood, while Hargeisa reportedly holds 67 from SSC-Khaatumo.
The Federal Government has officially recognised SSC-Khaatumo as a Federal Member State, granting it full representation in the National Consultative Council. Its territories are considered integral to the Federal Republic of Somalia.
