(18 June 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Somali government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have endorsed the 2025 workplan and budget for a major police reform initiative, reaffirming their commitment to building a professional and accountable police service across the country.
The decision was made during a Steering Committee meeting for the Joint Police Programme II (JPP II) in Mogadishu on Tuesday. The session was co-chaired by Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, and UNDP Resident Representative, Lionel Laurens.
The JPP II, which is funded by the European Union and the United Kingdom, is focused on strengthening Somalia’s police institutions by promoting community-oriented policing, improving service delivery, and ensuring inclusive recruitment with a focus on gender equality.
The endorsement brought together federal and regional Somali officials alongside the African Union mission (AUSSOM) and other international partners, signalling a unified approach to security sector reform in Somalia.
