(10-05-23) MOGADISHU – Somalia and Morocco have announced a joint initiative aimed at fostering sports and youth development in the African nations. This collaboration was cemented during a sideline meeting at the Pan-African Youth Leaders at African Ministerial Conference on Youth in Rabat, Morocco, where the Somali Minister of Youth and Sports, MP Mohamed Barre Mohamud, met with his Moroccan counterpart, Mr Mohamed Al-Mahdi bin Saeed.

The focus of their discussions centred on how Morocco could lend its support to the development of sports facilities, training centres, and vocational training programs for Somali youth. The two nations aim to leverage their partnership in order to empower young people with the skills necessary to secure employment and reduce youth unemployment rates.

To formalize this cooperation, the Ministers agreed to establish a technical team responsible for drafting a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed by both parties. Once completed, the MoU will be submitted to the legal institutions of Somalia and Morocco for ratification.

Somali Minister of Youth and Sports, MP Mohamed Barre Mohamud, has been a driving force behind the nation’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure and expanding vocational training opportunities for young people. Under his leadership, the ministry has set an ambitious goal of training 5,000 youth in short-term skills courses this year.

Sports analyst and Moroccan commentator, Karim El-Ahmadi, expressed his optimism about the collaboration, saying, “The partnership between Somalia and Morocco will not only boost the sports sector of Somalia but also enhance cultural exchange and understanding. This is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

As the two countries continue to work together to develop sports and youth initiatives, this partnership serves as a powerful example of African nations uniting for the betterment of the continent and the next generation.
