(25-06-23) MOGADISHU — Security in the capital has been tightened by Somali forces, namely the ‘Ciiltire’ operation, an integrated force consisting of the Somali Police Force, the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), and the Military-Police of the Somali National Army, in light of the Eid celebrations and Somalia Independence Week.
Early Sunday morning, a group of insurgents attempted to destabilise the capital’s security, launching several mortars from Garsbaaley area, primarily within the 2nd ward of Forilow around 11:30 AM. The attack occurred in close proximity to Aden Adde Airport, yet fortunately, no damage ensued.
The well-prepared security forces promptly executed a strategic operation in the area believed to be the origin of the mortar fire. They successfully recovered multiple mortar shells, mobile phones along with their cables, and secured control over the house from which the mortars were launched.
The Somali government seized this property and evacuated the occupants until the investigation into the identity of the Alshabab members who were causing distress amongst the public is concluded.
Speaking at a press conference, the spokesperson for the Somali Police Force, Sadiq Aden Ali Doodishe, stated that the group responsible had managed to evade capture but the security forces were able to take control of the base of operations. He presented the media with the recovered mortars and other materials that the group had left behind in their haste.
Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the security forces. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the insurgents responsible for the attempted attack.
