(07/07/23) MOGADISHU –The Kenyan police announced the killing of 20 al-Shabaab terrorists in an armed skirmish along the border with Somalia on Thursday. The attack, launched by heavily armed militants, engaged Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) for several hours, injuring eight officers in the process.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi, police spokesperson Resla Onyango stated that the militants ambushed a police patrol in Ogorwen, Mandera County. The injured officers are now being treated at a local hospital, set to be transported to Nairobi once stabilised.
This confrontation comes amidst Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki’s announcement that the planned reopening of the border points with Somalia would be delayed. Initially aiming to restore normalcy and strengthen ties, this decision, announced in May, has been postponed due to the surge in violence.
