(08-07-23) MOGADISHU – Heavy fighting erupted at midnight Saturday in Hudur town, Bakool region of South West Somalia, as Al Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack on a military base housing Ethiopian troops, according to local reports. The situation has heightened tensions in Hudur with the number of casualties still unknown.
The assault reportedly commenced between the cities of Rabdhure and Wajid with an explosive device targeting a convoy of the Ethiopian army. These claims have been propagated by media outlets sympathetic to Al Shabaab, who state that the insurgent group targeted “bases of the Ethiopian army and those of the South West Administration” situated in Hudur district.
In an assertive display of their alleged conquests, Al Shabaab also claimed to have attacked government forces and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) bases in the districts of Qoryoley, Janale and Barawe, all of which are part of the Lower Shabelle region.
