(11-07-23) MOGADISHU – Former Prime Ministers, Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke and Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, who also previously served as Puntland President, on Tuesday, jointly addressed the ongoing Puntland election dispute. The officials provided a potential resolution to the disagreement between the Puntland government and opposition factions, which has led to intermittent clashes in Garowe.
They shared that they’ve conducted extensive consultations with the government, opposition leaders, traditional elders, and political parties, discussing at length the dispute and exploring potential avenues for resolution.
The former leaders proposed that the government refrain from amending the constitution at this juncture, urging the timely organisation of indirect and traditional elections. They further advised that the government devise a comprehensive roadmap for the upcoming elections.
Additionally, they stressed the importance of proceeding with local council elections in the remaining three districts in Nugal, in order to finalise the local council elections in 30 Puntland districts.
