(13-07-23) MOGADISHU – The Presidential Special Envoy of Somalia for Somaliland, Abdikarim Hussein Guled, and the United Nations Representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing, convened on Thursday in Mogadishu. They focused their discussions on the resumption of negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Somaliland to achieve significant outcomes.
Their meeting occurred amidst escalating regional conflicts, notably in Laascaanood, where Somaliland and Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn (SSC) forces have been in conflict since February. The ongoing dialogue between the FGS and Somaliland featured prominently. Both the UN-Somalia and Special Envoy Guled asserted their support for an inclusive and comprehensive dialogue to address complex challenges and secure lasting solutions, as revealed in their tweets.
Special Envoy Guled highlighted the FGS’s commitment to unity and the Somali Government’s efforts to establish an official platform for dialogue. He also expressed his gratitude to the UN for their steadfast support towards the Somali Government and its people.
In response, UN Representative Catriona Laing confirmed the UN’s readiness to participate in the forthcoming negotiations between the FGS and Somaliland, expressing full support for the FGS’s initiatives.
