(15-07-23) DHUSAMAREB – Ahmed Abdi Kariye, the President of Galmudug State, Federal Republic of Somalia, received the new United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, Ms. Catriona Laing, at the Presidential Palace in Dhusamareb on Saturday. They discussed a broad spectrum of topics that included the general situation in Somalia, the NCC agreements, upcoming elections, the fight against terrorism, and the stabilisation of areas recently freed from insurgent control.
As part of her initial visits to Federal Member States, Ms. Laing was in Dhusamareb to engage with the President on various issues. These ranged from UN support, state-building, security, and forthcoming elections in the state. Ms. Laing expressed the UN’s commitment to supporting Galmudug in the preparations for local government elections and praised the region’s strides in advancing democracy.
On his Twitter account, President Kariye confirmed that his discussion with Ms. Laing covered a wide range of topics. This included the status of the country, the National Consultative Council (NCC) deal, electoral matters, the battle against Al-Shabaab, and stabilisation efforts in regions recently liberated from the extremist group.
This strategic meeting signifies the strengthening of Somalia’s international partnerships and the ongoing dedication of global entities, such as the United Nations, towards assisting the country in its journey towards lasting peace and stability.
