(01/08/23) MOGADISHU – Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale of Mogadishu has provided clarification concerning the controversial eviction orders issued by the Banadir Regional Administration. The orders affect residents occupying a plot of land in the Hamarweyne district, known as Kasa Italia.
According to Mayor Jimale, the land in question was historically under the purview of the Italian embassy and the recent eviction order came as a result of an official request from the Italian government to regain control of its property.
Mayor Jimale dismissed rumours suggesting that the eviction was intended to benefit private business interests, assuring the public that the decision was in response to the request from the Italian government.
Despite these assurances, the eviction order has sparked discontent among the affected occupants who voiced distress over the sudden displacement, highlighting the lack of relocation plans or assistance for those affected by the eviction.
