(16-08-23) MOGADISHU – Ambassador Joachim Waern, formerly the Swedish Ambassador to South Sudan, has officially started his term as the Swedish representative in Somalia, a transition celebrated by the Embassy of Sweden to Somalia through a welcoming tweet in Tuesday.
Though Sweden operates its diplomatic relations with Somalia through a dedicated section at the Swedish embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, the importance of the ambassador’s role cannot be understated. This section, which routinely conducts visits to Somalia, is now under the guidance of Mr. Waern.
Waern’s appointment as the Swedish Ambassador to Somalia is significant given his profound experience in the region and expertise in managing diplomatic relations in conflict zones. His successful tenure in South Sudan, amidst its unique challenges, has equipped him with invaluable insights and skills to navigate the complexities of the Horn of Africa.
Building on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Staffan Tillander, Ambassador Waern is expected to drive forward the bilateral relations between Sweden and Somalia, focusing on mutual cooperation, peace-building, and regional development.
