(21-08-23) DHUSAMAREB – Somali armed forces, with residents, have successfully reclaimed a significant expanse of territory in the Galgaduud region that was previously held by the Al-Shabaab militant group. This latest advance includes the liberation of villages such as Wabxo, Jaaw, Dadale, Habarcirir, and Xilin-Fardood.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed on Monday that these areas, previously a stronghold for the extremist group, are now under the firm control of government forces and the local residents. This comes as part of ongoing filtration operations across Galmudug.
With the intensified pressure from both ground and aerial assaults, Al-Shabaab is feeling the pinch, particularly in forested areas to the east of Galgaduud. Here, their strongholds have been decimated by the joint forces.
This comes on the back of a major troop movement from Dhusamareeb towards the east, past the town of Eelbur. Armed with a convoy of military vehicles and supplied by the 21st Division of the National Army, these forces, numbering in the thousands, are presently stationed in El La Hayala, strategically situated between the cities of Dhusamareb and Elbur.
Command of the National Armed Forces has set a clear directive: to rid the surrounding villages and areas of Al-Shabaab militants, especially as they near the city of Elbur. Troop deployments from Mahaas and Guricel are reinforcing these efforts, advancing towards Wabho, Jaw, and Burujed.
However, the forces remain cautious and will not hastily assume control of Elbur, keenly aware of potential hideouts and land mines where Al-Shabaab operatives could be lurking.
In a show of support and unity, Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, currently based in Dhusamareb, is set to lead a symbolic blood donation to those wounded by Al-Shabaab. His presence in Galmudug is a testament to the government’s commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab’s influence in the Galgaduud and Mudug regions.
Both state leaders and the Galmudug administration are optimistic. The operation is seen as a significant blow to Al-Shabaab, paving the way for the next phase of the war which is expected to see participation from troops across the neighbouring countries.
