(05-09-23) MOGADISHU — The U.S. Department of State granted $2 million to the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) Trust Fund on Tuesday to amplify ongoing efforts against the extremist group al-Shabaab. The funds are set to facilitate transport and medical evacuation support for Somali Security Forces, aiding joint operations with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Shane Dixon, U.S. Embassy in Somalia Chargé d’Affaires, emphasised the importance of strong logistical backing for Somali and ATMIS forces. “It is vital that Somali and ATMIS security forces have the strong logistical backing needed to defeat al-Shabaab on the battlefield,” he said. “We are proud to support UNSOS, a key partner to the United States and Somalia in our shared goal of advancing peace.”
“This contribution comes at a pertinent time and will positively impact our activities in providing agile logistics support to Somali Security Forces. Our support package is mandated by the UN Security Council and priorities in implementing this support are set by the Federal Government of Somalia,” said Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, Head of UNSOS.
The financial boost comes at a time when the Somali government and its allies are ramping up operations in the initial phase of a military offensive to liberate the regions of Hirshabelle and Galmudug from Al-Shabaab control. UNSOS is currently mandated to support approximately 15,900 Somali Security Forces concerning specific logistical needs.
